Why Develop with Microvision’s PicoP® Evaluation Kit (PEK) Instead of Panel-Based Displays?
Microvision’s PEK is a foundation for designers to develop integrated prototype systems that include embedded projection displays. PEK provides designers all of the benefits of Microvision’s laser scanning display engine, significantly outperforming panel-based solutions for embedded projection displays.
The following features and benefits show why product designers are choosing Microvision PEK to build their embedded display prototype and proof-of-concept systems.
Feature: INFINITE FOCUS
Benefit: Displays that use a 2D fixed pixel array to generate an image require a focusing lens and have a fixed focal depth. This means that to go from a tiny image (projector close to a surface) to a large sized image (projector far from a surface) requires adjusting a focus knob. PicoP creates images of any size that are always in focus and never require focus adjustment. This allows designers to create exciting new product designs where images can move in a radical way without having to adjust focus.
Feature: VIVID LASER COLORS
Benefit: Microvision uses spectrally pure laser light sources to create brilliant color images that are much deeper and more saturated than colors generated from LCD, LCOS or DLP panels.
Feature: SLEEK & SLIM
Benefit: “Thin is in”. The PicoP Evaluation Kit is only 10mm thick, which enables the development of contemporary prototype devices with appealing form factors. Panel-based pico projectors require focus lenses which add thickness and reduce the pocket appeal of devices.
Feature: WIDE FIELD OF VIEW
Benefit: PicoP has a wide throw angle of 43 degrees, which is substantially larger than panel-based display solutions. This means that the widescreen (16:9) image is large even when the projector is close to the surface, and can scale to 100” or larger in a dark environment.
Feature: WVGA RESOLUTION
Benefit: PicoP has WVGA resolution (848x480), which is the highest resolution pico projector currently available. This allows designers to build prototype devices that provide an amplified visual experience.
Feature: BRIGHTNESS UNIFORMITY
Benefit: PicoP provides a bright, beautiful display with 10 lumen uniform brightness throughout the entire image. Brightness uniformity means that the image has the same brightness in the center as it does at the edges. The competitive panel-based displays typically deliver 5-10 lm center brightness, with 70% reduction in the corners. We call this the “flashlight effect.”
